Convention
Update
8/15/08 - Friday
- The invocation was delivered by James "shorty" Rivers from Local 318.
- The Delegates heard from Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL) via video.
- The Constitutional proposals "not" recommended by the Constitution Committee were concluded. Many proposals not recommended were heard on the floor and voted upon by the Delegates.
- The Delegates heard from Congressman Henry Waxman (D-Ca) via video.
- President Hegarty spoke about the PAC committee and how we as a Union use the Political Action Committee to support those Democrats and Republicans who support legislation that is in favor of the interests of this Union and working people in the United States. Anti-Union Republicans and anti-Union Democrats are vigorously opposed by our PAC. Funds are raised by donations, fund raisers and 50/50 raffles at Union meetings and functions. We need allies in congress to preserve the interest of the Union and working men and women in America.
- A video presentation from Christopher Hayes (R-CT) was next. He spoke about his participation in the "Free Choice Act". This Act is intended to safeguard workers' ability to make their own decisions on whether they want to join a Union or not without harassment from employers.
- The Legislative and Political Committee, chaired by Western Regional Vice-President/President Local 320 Rudy Santos gave its report to the Delegates. There were 10 Resolutions recommended by this Committee to the Delegates which were read into the record and voted upon by the Delegates.
- The day ended with Roger Blacklowe and Bob Losi presenting to the Delegates recommendations from our Legislative and Political Liaison.
